Meet Dr. Alan Richmond

After 25 years of practicing medicine, Dr. Alan Richmond brings a unique perspective to the patient experience. His medical journey began with training as an obstetrician-gynecologist in New York, followed by a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine in Dallas, Texas. He spent his career practicing as what he describes as an “overqualified midwife,” providing comprehensive OBGYN care in Atlanta for a quarter-century.

The Transition Challenge

The shift from healthcare provider to healthcare recipient presented unexpected difficulties. As someone accustomed to being on the giving end of medical care, adapting to the patient role proved emotionally and psychologically challenging.

When Life Changed

Approximately two and a half years ago, Dr. Richmond began noticing subtle but troubling changes. As a former long-distance runner, he immediately recognized when his legs started feeling unusually heavy. Simple daily activities like showering and getting dressed became as exhausting as “running a marathon.”

The diagnosis was CIDP (Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy) – a condition so rare that even Dr. Richmond, with his extensive medical background, had never encountered it and had to research his own diagnosis.

The Steroid Struggle

Dr. Richmond’s initial treatment with high-dose steroids proved to be a nightmare. The side effects dramatically impacted his personal relationships and quality of life. He candidly shares how the medication made him “mean as a snake,” straining his 40-year partnership and causing even his beloved dogs to avoid him. The emotional toll of the treatment was as challenging as the physical symptoms of the disease itself.

Finding Hope with Soleo

When Dr. Richmond’s neurologist connected him with Soleo Health, it marked a turning point in his treatment journey. After 7-8 months with Soleo, he transitioned to IVIG (Intravenous Immunoglobulin) therapy, and the difference has been remarkable.

“IVIG has made a world of difference”

Dr. Richmond noticed improvements each month. The contrast between his steroid experience and IVIG treatment couldn’t be more stark.

What Makes Soleo Different

Dr. Richmond praises Soleo Health for transforming what could be a difficult treatment process into something manageable:

  • The nursing staff consistently provides exceptional care
  • When he was recovering from pneumonia, they seamlessly provided home infusion services
  • The entire process is streamlined and professional
  • They’ve simplified his complex medical needs with comprehensive coordination

The infusions, although I don’t wish them on anyone, with Soleo, it’s been very easy

A Doctor’s Perspective

Dr. Richmond’s journey offers invaluable insight into the patient experience from someone who truly understands both sides of healthcare. His testimony demonstrates how the right treatment approach, delivered by caring professionals, can restore not just physical health but also quality of life and hope for the future.
