Parenteral nutrition (PN) delivers nutrients directly into the bloodstream through a vein, bypassing the digestive system. It’s used when eating by mouth or other feeding methods can’t meet a person’s nutritional needs. When PN provides all of a person’s daily nutrition, it’s called total parenteral nutrition (TPN).
